Types of Dental Emergencies at DQS Dental
Dental emergencies are of various types, depending on the origin of pain and the level of pain. Sometimes biting into hard foods can cause a sharp pain which might disappear in a few hours when the tooth recovers from the shock. But if the pain is intense or if it lasts for more than a day then visiting an emergency dentist will be ideal to avoid the aggravation of the condition.Following are some emergency conditions which require treatment
- A toothache due to caries or any other infection
- Chipped tooth
- Lost Fillings
- Knocked out tooth
A toothache and dental treatment:
Dental caries is the most common cause of a toothache. When you have a toothache, an x-ray is taken and a visual exam is done to identify the offending tooth. The treatment of dental caries involves removal of the decayed part of the tooth. In the process, if the pulp of the tooth is exposed then a root canal treatment is done. At DQS Dental Care we use metal free treatment for fillings and crowns. When your tooth undergo root canal treatment, it is weakened and brittle. It has to be protected with a crown to prevent fracture.
Treatment for Cracked Teeth:
There are several treatments including dental bonding, placing a dental crown, performing a root canal or in severe cases tooth extraction. The type of treatment our dentist recommends will depend on the severity of the tooth fracture, so it's best to meet our emergency dentist in Calgary Alberta as soon as you suspect that you may have a tooth crack or tooth decay.
How to save a natural tooth which is knocked out?
One of the most common dental emergencies during sports events or adventure activities is a knocked out and chipped tooth. Patients should stay calm during such situations and follow few steps which are crucial in saving the tooth. The chipped tooth should be gently washed using water. In the case of the knocked out tooth, the root of the tooth should not be disturbed. The patient can either try placing it back in position or place it in a container of homogenized milk. The patient should rush to the emergency dentist immediately so the tooth can be re-implanted. The time interval between avulsion of the tooth and its insertion is critical for the survival of the tooth. Ideally, the tooth has to be re-implanted within 30 minutes of the accident to survive.
What to Do If You Lose a Filling?
Losing a filling from your tooth may be quite a traumatic event, particularly if it comes out while you’re eating and you accidentally bite down on it. However, there’s really no need to worry when a filling comes out of your tooth because our emergency dentist will be able to fix it. Also, there’s no need to save the filling if it is a composite, amalgam, or glass ionomer filling. If it is a gold or ceramic inlay filling then you can save it, since our dentist may be able to cement it back into place.
